Made for another world

"If I discover within myself a desire which no experience in the world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world." C. S. Lewis

5 Minute Friday - Every Day

I thought I'd do something new and link up with 5 minute Friday at The Gypsy Mama. Writing for five unedited minutes with the prompt ~ Every Day:

Go:

Every day in and out breathing, I gasp in grace. As I wake up, just as I have every morning for 34 years, He is there. But His every day's are different than mine. Creativity unbridled, Passion unhindered, Love all encompassing... Day after eternal day. My mind hurts at the thought of it. Reals at the idea of my days being invited to join His days, every day. Some days I remember and dive into the stream of his ever flowing current of unbroken day. Some days I don't and I'm the poorer for it.

Today I jump in fast flowing grace, sweeping me up into Him. Heart beat rushing in my ears, pounding to the rhythm of his great love. Oh, make my days every days, melding into eternity, in the midst of now. Shackles of time falling free in his presences every day!

Friday Favorites: The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis reviewed

This week's book is actually a series of books. I decided to review the Chronicles of Narnia together, even though the books vary greatly from one another. Many of you will be familiar with the first book written in the series, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, but perhaps some of you haven't read the other books in the set. Of course their are several movies based on the Chronicles, but in this case there is nothing to compare with the written word.

I've read the Chronicles of Narnia at least three times and I'm in the process of reading them to my son, I love those books! What an amazing picture of truth. I learn something new every time I open them, the excitement fresh with every reading. Each of the seven books, set in fantasy and filled with talking animals and mythological creatures, depicts an aspect of our journey to understand truth. At the heart of the books is the great lion Aslan, the Christ figure, encountering him in the pages makes my heart race.  In the seven books: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Prince Caspian; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Silver Chair; The Horse and His Boy; The Magician's Nephew and the Last Battle, there are sections in each that stand out to me, though I do have a few favorites.

(Spoiler alert for the end of the series.) One of my favorite sections comes in the last book and speaks to why I love them so much. "The Last Battle" closes with the main characters seeing the end of the Narnian world, as we will see ours end one day. The new world the characters find themselves in seems familiar but very different as well. They realize the old Narnian mountains and the new world's are "exactly alike". But, as Lucy says, "And yet they're not like. They're different. They have more colors on them and they look further away than I remembered and they're more...more...oh, I don't know..." " More like the real thing" says the Lord Digory. Truth dawns, the real Narnia was not dead, only the copy they had known. The copy had a beginning and end, it was a shadow, just as our world is a copy of the real thing.

The Unicorn, Jewel, sums it up, "I have come home at last! This is my real country! I belong here. This is the land I have been looking for all my life, though I never knew it till now. The reason why we loved the old Narnia is that it sometimes looked a little like this." The resonance of such a statement rings true with me. The longing for home, my real otherworldly home, I'm  learning drives me and is the motivation behind much of what I do. Narnia calls out that the real adventure is yet to come.

Lewis ends that last book with Aslan explaining to the four children and their friends that they would never have to leave him again. There had been an accident and they were dead. He says, "The term is over: the holidays have begun. The dream is ended: this is the morning." ...And as He spoke He no longer looked to them like a lion; but the things that began to happen after that were so great and beautiful that I cannot write them. And for us this is the end of all the stories (of Narnia), and we can most truly say that they all lived happily ever after. But for them it was only the beginning of the real story. All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before."

I can't wait for the real thing, Narnia just wets my appetite! These excerpts are a taste of what's inside these remarkable books, they are full of beauty, inspiration and adventure. If you haven't taken the time to read the Chronicles of Narnia, I recommend that you do! How about you, is there a work of fiction that has inspired your faith walk?

Tangled Hearts

Re-post from August 14, 2009

Broken tangled heap, barbed, rusty mess. Useless. Hearts lying in disrepair, hidden, hurting. Encountering people, children who are broken, tangled, messy challenges me. Little ones, barefoot, soiled, wasted by loved ones, by the world. I don't understand. I don't like brushing up against poverty, I resent ignorance. I like things neat and useful. I like people I can understand. Nice, clean, tidy people. I like to pretend I am one...

Jesus' eyes pierce, reveal, hold answers. He's not put off by messy. Thank heaven. He delights in challenge, chance to show his power, time for glory. I straighten, tuck, clean the rooms of my heart. Puff of wind and the card house falls. Eyes raise, meeting his. Questions forgotten, answers found in his face, The Answer, The Face. Hopeless people, scary people, secrets locked in wounded hearts. I see broken mess, cast aside and useless, he sees... he sees... Promise.Mess made straight. Promise of wounds healed, chains loosed. Freedom. Do I hope in the promise? Find comfort in the promise? Extend the promise? To me, to others? Oh, God help me. I want to see beauty behind angry eyes. I want to see fear turn to love right before me. Reaching out to take a marred, quivering world by the hand scares me. Turn my fears into bold belief, Heart Tamer. "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."

Do you believe the promise for you, for the broken others?

Holy eyes

Eyes to see the holy, the truly good, God in every moment, are hard to come by. Isn't every moment a fight for our eyes, will we see what we're dissatisfied with, what offends. Or will we lift our heads and turn our eyes, beholding Him. So hard. So worth it. I stepped outside last night for no reason, turned the corner, and encountered a burning bush, a blazing night sky. God wants our attention, calls out our names, he will give holy seeing eyes to those who ask and press in to see. So hard.

In the midst of regulation, rebellious people, idolatry, doubt, a dessert, Moses asked and was given new eyes to see beyond; and so might we be, if we ask. "Then the Lord came down in a cloud and stood there with him; and he called out his own name, Yahweh. The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, "Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected - even children in the third and fourth generations." Moses immediately threw himself to the ground and worshiped. And he said, "O Lord, if it is true that I have found favor with you, then please travel with us. Yes, this is a stubborn and rebellious people, but please forgive our iniquity and our sins. Claim us as your own special possession. The Lord replied, "Listen, I am making a covenant with you in the presence of all your people. I will perform miracles that have never been performed before anywhere in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people around you will see the power of the Lord - the awesome power I will display for you." Exodus 34:5-10

Aren't we often stubborn and rebellious people, but claimed. Claimed by mercy and forgiveness. He's made a covenant with us, a new covenant born of blood and we have seen His glory "the glory of the one and only Son," (John 1). But not everyone sees His glory, so many have missed the Son. Many see no grace, only ugly. Let's not be among the ones who see only the curse, let's lift our eyes and see God, in every moment, traveling with us.

How have you lifted your eyes above the pain and ugly in this world and seen God calling out his name to you?
